Emergent Curriculum; digging deeper

Saturday April 22nd 9am
NSCC Truro Campus

In this two-part series, we will spend the morning exploring our varied understandings of Emergent Curriculum and what this looks like in practice. In particular, we will focus on discovering the meanings behind children's actions during play, and after reflection, ponder the possibilites for how to respond. Participants will then be asked to try out some of their new thinking in their classrooms, to share when we return for a follow-up session in two weeks.

Book Study meeting (closed group)

May 4th
online, with educators in Halton region, Ont.

From time to time, it is my pleasure to be invited to join with educators who are using my books for study, reflection, and discussion. I usually meet with them through Skype, FT, or GoToMeeting platforms. In this way, we can chat fairly informally, discuss participants' questions, and share everyone's perspectives. This particular group has been using Pedagogical Documentation as a point of discussion over several months. I am excited to hear their thoughts and questions!!

This follow-up session for participants of the April 22nd group will explore what happened when new ideas and approaches were attempted. We will desconstruct the successes and struggles... What happened? How and Why?....and then document an aspect of the participants' work.

Think About What You Do and Why You Do It! Reflecting together on our Everyday Practices

May 13th 2017
NS College of ECE, Halifax, N.S.

All around the world, including in Canada, early childhood educators are encouraged to be reflective practitioners. Indeed, many of our Early Years Frameworks now include this expectation. But what does 'reflective practice' mean in terms of our everyday lives with young children? People interpret this term in many ways, and during this afternoon together we will use photographs, video clips, and conversations to learn about thinking protocols that will lead us deeper into reflective practice and the potential that it holds for the children we nurture, and for ourselves as educators - be prepared to grow!!

The Emergent Curriculum Journey

November 18th 2017
Ottawa area

Still in the planning stages, Kathy Boelsma and myself are collaborating to provide an event for early years practitioners around the Emergent Curriculum journey. Watch this space for updates!!

In classrooms that use inquiry-based approaches - including those who use Emergent Curriculum, engage in long or short term project work, or are inspired by Reggio Emilia - we work hard to find the time to document children's ideas, thinking, and learning.

The chocolate project evolved from the children's disbelief about where chocolate comes from....
