Rethinking Possibilities: Valuing Early Learning Environments
What is the impact of the ECE environment on children’s identities, relationships, ideas and understandings?
In this encounter, we examine all the different lenses for examining our environment. We will uncover our thinking around relationships with materials, people, and the community, and examine the role of time and aesthetics in building collaborative environments.
Pedagogical Documentation: A practical tool for Thinking & Decision-Making
We will discover and discuss the role of documentation – its uses for both adults and children, and the types of documentation that best suit your setting. In particular, we will explore raw documentation, meant not for sharing, but for reflection and response on the part of the educators. This practical form of documentation may help educators who struggle with finding time for more formal approaches. As well, we will uncover the differences between display, documentation, and pedagogical documentation, and how pedagogical documentation can become a form of dialogue and teacher-research.
Foundations and Inspirations from Reggio Emilia
The approaches used in Reggio Emilia have long been a source of inspiration and dialogue for educators around the world. Their work is rooted in democracy, relationship, and deep reflection. We will explore the foundations and history of this approach in order to understand how their educators collaborate with children. We will examine and discuss inspirations, interpretations, and applications from Reggio Emilia that are of interest to the group.
Pedagogical Documentation: practicalities and inspirations (in person only)
We will take a deep dive into documentation over the course of two sessions, first exploring the foundations and differences between different forms of documentation, and secondly we will experience constructing documentation through using the Cycle of Inquiry to observe, reflect, and respond to children’s ideas, thinking, and strategies.
